Historical Background
Bordeaux Enhanced Option Elementary School has a rich history. Specifically, the name itself comes directly from Old France. Dr. M. O. Randalls, a physician, spent his early life in Bordeaux, France. Dr. Randalls settled in this community, which he later called Bordeaux. Later, he donated property for the construction of the first elementary school in 1889. Bordeaux is unique because it may be the only school standing on land bought by a PTA. This land was used in the 1922 construction and expansion of the building. The original school opened in 1922 and has undergone many changes and additions over the years. The building was reopened in 1961. The school has served grades K- 8 in various configurations at various times. Presently Bordeaux is a Pre- K- 4th grade Enhanced Option Elementary School. The Enhanced Option concept is a part of the Metro Schools five (5) year strategic plan to restructure the school system to allow students to attend fewer schools closer to home, throughout their educational career. Students are now attending three (3) schools within their community.
Facilities
The school has 333,232 sq. ft. The utilization capacity is 369. The school sits on 4.10 acres. The main structure houses the main office complex, 27 classrooms plus a computer lab, a library/media center, guidance/office/classroom, Encore program, a bookroom, Speech Pathologist, Vanderbilt Therapist, cafeteria, a clinic, and a faculty lounge. While the heat is still supplied by a boiler system, the school received split-level central air units in each classroom in 2001. As a result of modernizing our facility, we now have additional classrooms which include a gymnasium/playroom, music, reading, art room and a Family Resource Center. The new addition has doubled the size of our square footage.
Environmental and Safety Conditions
The school is equipped with ramps and two elevators. The completion of the modernization and renovations made has met all ADA requirements. The building has a motion sensor security system. The fire extinguishers are strategically located throughout the building. All rooms are equipped with emergency exit plans posted near the exits of each classroom. Emergency fire doors secure all hallways. Environmental and building inspections are conducted yearly. Health and pest inspections occur throughout the year. All rooms are equipped with a telephone paging system for two way communication. The school has a Special Situation Security Plan, a Crisis Management Plan, and an Inclement Weather Plan. Other emergency plans include a Fire, Bomb Threat, Tornado, and Biological Chemical Threat Evacuation Plan. The school property is bordered on two sides by fencing. The two main entrances are monitored by closed-circuit cameras and can be operated from the main office.
Grade Distribution
Bordeaux Enhanced Option Elementary School serves Pre-K through Grade 4. The Pre-K program serves four-year olds that are in need of early intervention. The students come to school within the designated zone or nearby communities if slots are available. They attend school for 6 hours daily and are immersed in a rich experience based, state approved curriculum. The MNPS District standards are designed to prepare them to achieve alongside their peers and to sustain success throughout their educational careers. Parents must provide transportation for this program. Currently, we have two classes with an 18:1 pupil teacher ratio (PTR). Each class has two slots for special needs students and an educational assistant.
We offer full day kindergarten classes for children who will turn five (5) on or before September 30th. Presently, we have five (5) Kindergarten classes, five (5) first grade classes, and four (4) second grade classes with a pupil teacher ratio (PTR) of 15:1. We have four (4) third and three (3) fourth grade classes each with a pupil teacher ratio (PTR) of 15:1. Our curriculum and standards are taught through active learning experiences involving all disciplines. We also have Encore, Music, Art, Computer Lab., and Physical Education classes that enhance and extend instruction.
